Date Night in Brixton

There are two ways a date-night restaurant can go wrong. It can try far too hard to be romantic, or it can feel so casual that you might as well have stayed at home.

The Laundry sits somewhere much more useful in the middle.

Our home on Coldharbour Lane is a neighbourhood bistro with enough atmosphere to make dinner feel like an occasion, but not so much ceremony that the evening becomes about the restaurant rather than the person sitting opposite you.

For anyone looking for date night restaurants in Brixton, that balance matters.

Start with a drink and take it from there

There is no need to decide in advance whether the evening is one drink or three courses.

From Monday to Friday, L’Apéro runs from 5pm to 7pm with £10 cocktails and £6 pints and house wine, so the first round can happen before either of you has committed to anything beyond sitting down.

Stay for dinner and the autumn menu gives you plenty to share without turning every dish into a negotiation.

Chicken liver parfait with feijoa chutney, prawns in miso garlic butter and burrata with confit cherry tomatoes all work well at the start of the table, before mains such as Wagyu beef and black olive pie, Steak Frites and duck confit.

Let Mel choose the wine

A restaurant run by a Chef Sommelier has certain advantages on a date.

Mainly, you do not need to pretend you know which bottle to order.

Mel’s list moves between European classics and New Zealand wines, with current bottles including Neudorf Chardonnay, Te Kano Blanc de Noir and Loveblock Pinot Noir alongside Rioja, Chianti, Barolo, Loire whites and Champagne.

Tell the team roughly what you like and let them handle the difficult part.

Tuesday makes a particularly good date night

Free Corkage Tuesday gives you an excuse to bring something of your own.

Maybe it is a bottle you have been meaning to open, something connected to a previous trip or simply something good that has been sitting at home waiting for dinner.

Bring it with you and corkage is free.

That is considerably more personal than choosing whatever the house is pouring.

Save room for dessert

There are evenings when sharing dessert is charming.

There are also evenings when ordering two is the healthier relationship choice.

The current menu includes sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream, lemon posset brûlée with burnt butter shortbread and a triple chocolate brownie with hokey pokey bon bon and crème.

We will leave that decision to the table.

A date night that does not feel overplanned

The Laundry works because it can be as much or as little of an occasion as you want it to be.

Come for cocktails and decide to eat. Book dinner and stay for another bottle. Start early with L’Apéro or make the table the whole evening.

That is our version of a date night in Brixton.
